OUR STORY

How It All Began

Roo Trips was born in an MBA classroom but the seed was planted long before. As a kid, I dreamed of hopping in an RV and hitting the open road. I would often hear my classmates talk about their travel experiences over summer break from heading to their family cabin "up north" to exciting trips to Disney World. These were luxuries that my family could not afford but I yearned for that kind of adventure. That dream never left me. But as I got older, I started to see how travel, especially road trips and outdoor adventures, often came with barriers.

So during my MBA, I started putting that dream on paper. I asked myself: What if we made road travel easy, joyful, and safe for everyone? What if we created space for community, discovery, and restoration without the stress?

Roo Trips became my solution. A curated travel experience for folks who've been left out of the traditional narrative. A way to bring my love of travel together with my values of community, equity, and fun!

The Road Hasn't Always Been Open

It's important to name that freedom of movement has not always been equally available.

For Black folks and other people of color in this country, hitting the road hasn't always meant freedom...it's meant risk.

From sundown towns to unsafe lodging options, travel, especially outside of urban areas, came with real threats. That's what led to the creation of The Green Book, a travel guide published from 1936-1966 to help Black travelers safely navigate the U.S. It listed hotels, restaurants, and gas stations where they'd be welcomed, not just served, but protected.

While times have changed, the residue of that exclusion remains. Access to nature, ease of travel, and comfort on the road aren't guaranteed for everyone. Roo Trips is part of the work to shift that narrative.

Why 'Roo Trips'?

The kangaroo is our symbol. Why? Because kangaroos move forward. Kangaroos carry what matters with them, they move in community, and they leap with power and purpose. That's what Roo Trips is about: moving forward, together.
